Hearing impaired persons tend to have a heightened probability of drug use issues because of their impairment, and rehab services have to be available to them which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer support to ensure rehabilitation clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for each individual to ensure their own personal problems can be treated in rehab.
