Hearing impaired individuals generally have an elevated probability of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available to them which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to drug use. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are definitely a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support so that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for each person to ensure their unique problems can be treated in rehab.
