Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a greater risk of drug use issues due to their impairment, and treatment services must be available which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to drug use. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as well as rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs.
