Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a heightened risk of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer interactions to ensure rehab clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for each person to ensure that their own personal problems can be addressed in rehabilitation.
