Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a greater probability of drug use issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available to them which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. Nonetheless, drug treatment counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support to ensure that treatment clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for each individual to ensure their own problems can be remedied in treatment.
