Hearing impaired persons generally have a heightened risk of drug use issues because of their impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. However, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals comprehend the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face.
