Hearing impaired men and women generally have an elevated likelihood of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services should be available which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in daily life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. However, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions to ensure rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services could be more tailor-made for each person to ensure that their particular problems can be treated in rehab.
