Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased chance of drug use issues because of their impairment, and treatment services have to be at hand which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to drug abuse.
