Hearing impaired persons generally have a greater chance of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehab services should be at hand which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support so that treatment clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services might be more tailored for each person to ensure their own challenges can be remedied in rehabilitation.
