Hearing impaired men and women generally have a heightened chance of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehab services have to be at hand which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with drug use. However, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support so that rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services might be more tailored for each person to ensure that their particular challenges can be remedied in rehab.
