LGBT is short for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and there are programs which address the unique needs of these clients. People who are LGBT can feel alone, not understood, and viewed as socially unwanted. This may be a very hard or painful existence, and leads many LGBT people to a lifestyle of substance abuse to numb this pain. Somebody who is LGBT may not feel safe in a conventional treatment center amongst individuals who aren't experiencing the same problems they are experiencing of their lives. A LGBT program provides an environment which can be totally free of judgment, where LGBT clients can be completely safe and comfortable revealing to their peers and rehab counselors issues which should be resolved so that they can get well. Rehabilitation counselors within a LGBT rehab will help clients mend relationships with their family, in the case their family disagree with their sexual preference as is often the case. This situation is certainly a frequent trigger for drug use, and it is an illustration of something can be handled in rehab. LGBT clients often would like to be accepted within their lives, and rehab will help them accept themselves and build confidence to enable them to lead a healthy life free from drugs and alcohol.
