Hearing impaired persons generally have a heightened chance of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be available which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, drug rehab counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions in order that treatment clients can know that they're not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailor-made for each person to ensure that their particular challenges can be treated in treatment.
