Hearing impaired persons generally have a heightened probability of drug use issues because of the impairment, and rehab services should be available which cater to their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Nonetheless, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support so that rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailor-made for everybody to ensure that their own challenges can be addressed in treatment.
