Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased risk of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services have to be available which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer support to ensure that rehab clients can know they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure that their particular problems can be addressed in rehabilitation.
