Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a heightened likelihood of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available to them which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to drug use. However, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support to ensure rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailor-made for each person to ensure that their particular challenges can be handled in treatment.
