Hearing impaired men and women generally have a heightened likelihood of drug use issues because of the impairment, and treatment services have to be at hand which serves their circumstances. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany possessing this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face.
