Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased chance of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehab services must be available which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services might be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure their unique challenges can be handled in rehab.
