Hearing impaired persons generally have a greater probability of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services should be at hand which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with drug use. However, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support to ensure rehabilitation clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailor-made for each individual so that their own problems can be treated in rehab.
