Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased likelihood of drug use issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be at hand which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in daily life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions in order that rehab clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for each person so that their own personal challenges can be handled in rehabilitation.
