Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased chance of drug use issues because of the impairment, and rehab services must be at hand which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug use. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support in order that rehab clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailor-made for each person so that their unique challenges can be treated in treatment.
